During the Great Depression in the United States, many people who were unable to find work or support themselves in their hometowns became transients, often known as "hobos." These were individuals who traveled from place to place in search of work, often by illegally hitching rides on freight trains or hopping on and off railway lines. Hobos formed communities and subcultures based on their shared experiences and challenges, and they developed a unique language and set of customs to help them navigate their way through a difficult and uncertain time. While some hobos were itinerant workers who followed seasonal employment opportunities, many others were unemployed and homeless individuals who had few options other than to keep moving in search of a better life.
